Day 7: Gorilla Trek- A Soul Awakened This is the day. After an early briefing, you set forth with your guide and the trackers into the dense verdant jungle. The trekking can be hard, forcing you to climb slippery paths and wade through thick undergrowth. Every step, though, has anticipation attached to it. And then you come across them: a silverback, huge and calm, eyes sharp with wisdom. The females groom one another, and the infants tumble playfully in the undergrowth. For one sacred hour, you become a guest of theirs. It is a quiet yet mightily powerful exchange, one that transcends words and is etched deep into the soul of any witness to it. Fatigue gives way to awe. Day 8: Crossing Borders – From Uganda to Rwanda Prepare yourself for a late start, breakfast at leisure, and a good deal of observation of life in the country en route to Volcanoes; irregular monkey tracklets along the path will make worthy stops for a good sighting. Rwanda is called the land of a thousand hills; truly, the landscape is splattered with several thousand: deep green, carved into neat agricultural terraces. Musanze can be a delightful stop on the way to the Gate to Volcanoes National Park; the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village also promises upliftment through traditional dance, music, and storytelling-an insight into vibrant Rwandese culture. Day 9: Golden Monkeys and a Somber Reflection Another magical monkey hunt presents itself in the morning. The golden monkeys are endangered and considered very charismatic animals with their gorgeous fur and their playful nature. This visit is a lighter one but will still create unforgettable memories. The afternoon will be very introspective while visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial. A visit here is harrowing yet essential—a moving tribute to the victims and a very inspiring lesson for the resilience of human spirit. It thus also puts in context the incredible journey and present-day Rwandan unity. Day 10: Into the Heart of the Congo-Goma, DRC A transition day is on the cards today. You will be taken to the DRC border where your Virunga guide will meet you. After the formalities, you will enter Goma, a city whose character has been forged in a volatile volcanic environment. The view of the Nyiragongo Volcano makes a stark reminder of the power you are about to wrestle with. A briefing at the Virunga offices will prepare you for the ascent before you are driven down to the base of the volcano. Day 11: Ascent of Nyiragongo Intense physical and mental tests. A steep 4-6-hour hike of sharp volcanic rock leads one to the summit of 3500-plus meters. A late afternoon ascent reaching the top just at dusk clicking of reward beyond comprehension. From the crater rim, a sight from the dawn of time presents itself: a huge cauldron filled with lava actively churning in brilliant red, almost supernatural hues. The roaring, the heat, sulphur scent-largely primal yet magnificent experience. Basic cabins lie on the rim to accommodate visitors for the night, with light from the volcano’s fiery heart providing an unforgettable ambience. Day 12: Descent and Lowland Gorillas After the sunrise while regarded in awe of the lava lake, you start your descent. While the return trip down is easier, you will return to the base with a great feeling of achievement. From here, you behold the option of another great primate encounter: tracking the lowland gorillas through the verdant forests of Virunga Massif. Though different from the mountain variety in many respects, they are no less majestic. Alternatively, you can opt to take it easy and get well-rested at your lodge after the climb. Day 13: Contingency and Return to Kigali This day is wisely kept as a contingency. A mountain weather is unpredictable, and to have a day around ensures that you do not miss either the Nyiragongo climb or the gorilla trek on account of inclement weather. If everything runs smoothly, this day will allow you to relax and explore more of Virunga or begin a return journey. You will cross the border at Goma back into Rwanda, thereafter to the comfort and familiarity of Kigali for one final much-deserved rest. Day 14: Farewell to the Hills Again A last breakfast awaits you in Rwanda. Depending on your flight schedules, there will be a few hours left for last-minute shopping in the bustling markets of Kigali or perhaps a quick tour of the coffee plantations. Herein lies the day of reflection, processing, and appreciating an immense experience the past two weeks have comprised. Day 15: Departure You transfer to Kigali International Airport, camera heavy with photographs but your heart, mind, and soul charged with thoughts of giants, animal and mineral alike, and an unshakable feeling that the recognition of something ancient, powerful, and truly wild has just taken place. This 15-day odyssey is far from just a trip. It is a spirit recalibration reminding you of the world’s immense beauty, its fragile wonders, and the bits of privilege that came with being a witness to it all. In exchange for storytelling, the traveler goes back with a piece of Africa’s soul, which comes at the cost of giving away some pieces of his own weight.
